What's Blooming in March

It's late March 2025 here on Long Island NY, zone 7b. It's truly spring weather with some days warm and sunny and others downright cold! Nevertheless, the birds are chirping, the grass is getting greener and buds are swelling on the trees.

Here are a few things that are blooming this month:

Crocus are one of the first flowers (and bulbs) to bloom in early spring, often pushing through the last remnants of snowk to signal warmer days are ahead. Their delicate, cup-shaped blooms come in shades of purple, yellow, white and even striped varieties, making them a cheerful sight in gardens, lawns and meadows - and are an essential early nectar source for bees!

The sweet, frilly flowers of the Hellebores (Lenten Rose) emerge upward from the center and fan outwards. Removing the old foliage allows them to really shine in the spotlight! Fun fact: Hellebores commonly referred to as Lenten Roses because they often bloom around the time of Lent, late winter to early spring. Despite their name, they are not actually roses at all! They come in various shades of white, rose, pink and purple and are perfect for a shady spot in the garden.

Scilla (Squill) and Chinodoxa (Glory-of-the-Snow) are both blue bulbous plants that bloom in early spring. Scilla flowers face downward and the Chinodoxa flowers face upward. Read more about these little blue flowers here!

A four-season star for shrub borders, foundation plantings, and hedging, the evergreen and compact shrub, Pieris japonica 'Katsura', welcomes spring with cascading clusters of rosy pink flowers, each shaped like a little bell and smelling oh so sweet!

Even as I'm writing this, I see more and more buds swelling and about to bloom. Can't wait!!
